YOUR SENSORY BABY
Your baby has a sensory personality that influences how they respond to stimuli. Have you noticed that your baby gets fussy wearing certain textures of clothing, or is shy when in new surroundings or that they can fall asleep anywhere? These are all ways that your baby’s sensory personality affects their experience of the world around them. Knowing your little one’s sensory personality gives you the insight to recognise their uniqueness and adapt your parenting style to meet their needs.
Parenting and child-care expert, Meg Faure presents "Your Sensory Baby" - an easy-to-use online tool to help you better understand and care for your baby or toddler.

Tune in to your baby
Every baby is different. You only have to spend an hour at a mum and baby group to be able to be able to pick out the really laid back, easy-going babies from those who are more high-needs and maybe a little fussy.
There are four main baby sensory personality types:

The sensitive baby perceives sensory input with great intensity. Because they interprets sounds, touch and sights as a potential threat, this baby needs to have the sensory environment filtered, especially as a newborn.

The settled baby’s brain has a natural capacity to filter a lot of sensory information. Sounds are filtered so your baby is not easily woken by noise; touch is filtered so a dirty nappy or scratchy fabric may not bother your baby at all.

The slow to warm up baby is initially sensitive to sensation and tends to avoid situations that are new and potentially overwhelming. These little ones like predictability and being with people they know.

The social butterfly loves sensory input and stimulation, which they use to interact happily. Receiving too little stimulation can make this baby grumpy because they are not getting enough information from their world.
